A Good Drip Coffee Brewer: Essential to a Good Cup of Coffee

Most of us have a drip coffee brewer in our kitchens. They’ve made coffee quite easy, but what about a truly good cup of coffee? A good drip coffee brewer is going to cost you a little bit of cash, but it’s going to be well worth that good tasting cup of joe every morning. The coffee: Proportion, water, and coffee In general, you’re going to want two tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water. If you like your coffee a little bit stronger, use a little more, and if you would like your coffee a little bit weaker, use a little bit less, but start with two tablespoons for every 6 ounces of water and work from there. When it comes to the coffee itself, the best thing to do is to grind your own fresh, every time you make a pot of coffee. You can keep the (roasted) beans in the freezer so that they stay fresher; just make sure you wrap them well so that they don’t pick up “freezer taste” along the way. Your local grocery store should carry whole beans that have been freshly roasted and then vacuum-sealed. • The grinder You can find coffee grinders in a lot of places (including online), whether electric (plug-in) or battery-operated. The electric ones are more convenient if you’ve got a plug close by, since you won’t need to be replacing batteries, but both will do a good job for you. Clean your grinder after every use by tapping out any loose grounds, and then wiping out the inside with a damp paper towel. Leave the top off so that it can air dry between uses. You can choose burr grinders or blade grinders; most grinders found in stores are blade grinders, and though these are not as long lasting as the burr grinders, they’re much more affordable and easy to find than the burr grinders. The grind For your drip coffee maker, you are going to want a medium grind. Experiment with your grinder to get the best result. The water No coffee is going to taste right if it’s not made with good water; it should be filtered, fresh and cold. If possible, use an inexpensive faucet-fitted water filter to filter your water for best taste. It’s perfectly acceptable and even preferable, by the way, to use tap water as long as it’s had some sort of filtration. The drip coffee brewer There are lots of perfectly good drip coffee brewers available that are modestly priced; check online for the best prices; you can choose “single cup” coffee brewers, 10 or 12 cup coffee brewers, those that are programmable, those with stainless steel accoutrements, and so on. Choose the best drip coffee brewer for your needs. Aside from features like programming, most mid-priced coffee brewers will do as good a job as the fancier ones in brewing a cup of coffee, as long as you have the right ingredients: Good coffee, good water, and the right proportions. A final note about filters: You do need filters for your drip coffee brewer, and the best ones are those that are unbleached. Filters that have been bleached have chemicals in them that can be harmful and can actually cause bad taste in your coffee.
