Peru vacations: A Perfect Day in Lima by Henry Arnault
For a first time visitor to Peru and Lima, the capital of the country, it might be confusing to manage this large city. It is one of the most populated in the world with more people than even places such as Rio de Janeiro and Cairo, meaning its transportation networks and sights can be hard to manage at first glance. However, it is easy to have a stress-free trip to Lima. Here is our suggestion for a perfect day in the city.
Grab breakfast at a bodega
The bodega will be your best friend in Peru. Found in the smallest towns and in the tiniest of street corners, these convenience shops are stocked with all the basics you need for a meal. Everything from milk, bread, tomato sauce, cookies, and butter to ice cream and lunch meats can be found among the shelves. Take a look around to see what Peruvians eat on a daily basis, then grab a yogurt and fruit to enjoy in the early morning.
Morning stroll over a pyramid
In the middle of the trendy and residential Miraflores district is the Huaca Pucllana, built by the Lima civilization hundreds of years ago before the Incas ever existed. For a small entrance fee, a guided tour will take you across and over the pyramid once used for highly religious purposes. A museum on the grounds gives further perspective on Lima’s history, and a 5-star restaurant overlooking the ruins has a most unique dining vista.
Lunch at a cevicheria
Ceviche, a platter of fresh seafood marinated in lime juice and other light spices, is considered the national dish, not to be missed on any Peru trip. Limeños tend to enjoy ceviche on the weekends in groups since it is a shared experience. Pair your plate with a beer or refreshing dark purple chicha juice to feel like a local!
Discover the historic downtown
When the afternoon gets going, it’s time to head downtown where the action is at its busiest. Lima was once the seat of the Spanish empire in South America, and much of the original colonial architecture is fantastically preserved. In addition to the vibrant Plaza de Armas with its orange and yellow hues, take time to admire the main Cathedral, San Francisco Church, and pure white Plaza San Martin to complete your trips to Peru. Wooden balconies made of the best materials remind of eras long gone. Don’t walk too fast, however, because in Lima, many of the best restaurants, shops, and bars only have a modest sign outside acknowledging their presence!
Dance the night away in Barranco
Although shopping and afternoon walks are best in Miraflores, the nightlife district is Barranco. Large dance discotheques cater to younger crowds while elegant lounges address those who want a more laidback time. Also try to visit Barranco in the daytime to see its beautiful bohemian details.
